sustainable aviation

Public concern about the impact of aviation on climate change continues to drive the political agenda. This follows the publication of the Air Transport White paper in December 2003 and the ratification by of the Kyoto Protocols, leaving the way open for the agreement to come into force. In addition, the new and demanding targets for reduced aircraft emissions, emerging from the European Commission Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE), have raised yet further the pressure for transformational change in the industry.

These issues were recognised by the Aerospace Innovation Growth Team (AeIGT) as a major challenge for the industry. The need for industry to work together to develop a commercial aviation sustainability strategy was a major focus for SBAC in 2004 and the AeIGT recommendations were briefed in person to the Prime Minister in February 2005.

The SBAC Sustainable Aviation Board was inaugurated in October 2004 to lead on Sustainable Aviation for the sector. A Sustainable Aviation Council was subsequently formed to lead at industry level.

The publication of the Sustainable Aviation strategy in June of 2005 was a world first for the aerospace manufacturing sector and its airport, airline and National Air Traffic Services partners. This initiative has since become the focus for SBAC action in this critical area for the future of the industry.
