UK Agencies and Departments

Acas
Acas is an independent statutory body which aims to improve organisations and working life through better employment relations. Acas provides up-to-date information, independent advice, high quality training and works with employers and employees to solve problems and improve performance. In August 2005, Acas published its plan of action for 2005/6-2007/8.

British National Space Centre
BNSC is a partnership, formed from 11 Government Departments and Research Councils, to coordinate UK civil space activity. Together their expenditure on civil space amounts to around £188 million per year.

Civil Aviation Authority
The CAA is the UK's independent aviation regulator, with all civil aviation regulatory functions (economic regulation, airspace policy, safety regulation and consumer protection) integrated within a single specialist body.

Defence Export Services Organisation
As a central unit in the UK Ministry of Defence, DESO's mission is to help UK defence exporters succeed.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Defra works for the essentials of life - food, air, land, water, people, animals and plants. Its remit is the pursuit of sustainable development - weaving together economic, social and environmental concerns. SBAC works with Defra across areas of sustainable aviation.

Department for Trade and Industry
The DTI drives the ambition of 'prosperity for all' by working to create the best environment for business success in the UK. It helps people and companies become more productive by promoting enterprise, innovation and creativity.

Department for Transport
DfT's objective is to oversee the delivery of a reliable, safe and secure transport system that responds efficiently to the needs of individuals and business whilst safeguarding the environment.

Export Credit Guarantee Department
The ECGD is the UK's official export credit agency reporting to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. The ECGD aims to help UK manufacturers and investors trade overseas by providing them with insurance and/or backing for finance to protect against non-payment.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The role of the FCO is to co-ordinate and pursue UK policies abroad. With the DTI, it helps companies in the UK become more competitive by promoting overseas sales and investment and by attracting quality foreign direct investment to the UK.

National Composites Network
The National Composites Network is a unique Knowledge Transfer Network jointly funded by government and industry that embraces the entire UK Composites industry and its supply chain.

National Air Traffic Services
NATS provides air traffic control services to aircraft flying in UK airspace, and over the eastern part of the North Atlantic. Safety is NATS' first and foremost priority but it also aims to provide its service in an efficient and expeditious way. This year NATS will handle more than two million flights carrying over 180 million passengers.

National Physics Laboratory
NPL is the United Kingdom's national standards laboratory, an internationally respected and independent centre of excellence for R&D, and knowledge transfer in measurement and materials science.

UK Trade & Investment
UKTI is the Government organisation that supports companies in the UK doing business internationally and overseas enterprises seeking to set up or expand in the UK.

UK Trade Associations and Forums

Airports Operators Association
AOA is the trade association that represents the interests of British airports and is the principal body with whom the UK Government and regulatory authorities consult on airport matters. The SBAC works with the AOA on sustainable aviation issues.

British Airport Services & Equipment Association
BASEA is a trade association for airport services and equipment suppliers.

British Air Transport Association
BATA represents the vast majority of UK airlines. Its role is to represent the industry to government, airports and other industry regulators and suppliers.

British Naval Equipment Association
BNEA is a market orientated trade association servicing companies that build, refit and modernise warships, supply weapons and sensor systems and other naval equipment and provide related services in design, consultancy and finance in the naval market. The SBAC works with the BNEA under the Defence Industries Council.

Confederation of British Industry
The CBI's mission is to help create and sustain the conditions in which businesses in the UK can compete and prosper for the benefit of all. Through the SBAC's membership of the CBI, we seek support lobbying campaigns, where it is beneficial for our issues to be set in a broader cross-industry context.

Defence Industries Council
Defence Industries Council is a forum for senior executives from defence companies and trade associations to discuss issues of strategic importance to the UK defence industry. DIC prepares the positions adopted by industry at meetings of the National Defence Industries Council (NDIC) for consultation with the Secretary of State for Defence. The Secretariat for the DIC is collocated at the SBAC Offices.

Defence Manufacturers Association
Defence Manufacturers Association, the UK's defence trade association and the voice of the UK Defence Industry. The SBAC works with the DMA under the Defence Industries Council.

Engineering Employers Federation
EEF is the organisation for manufacturing, engineering and technology-based businesses and is one of the UK's leading providers of business services in employment relations and employment law, health, safety and environment, manufacturing performance, and education and skills.

Intellect
Intellect is the trade body for the UK-based information technology, telecommunications and electronics industry. The SBAC works with Intellect under the Defence Industries Council.

Manufacturing Technologies Association
MTA is the national organisation representing companies that are involved in the UK machine tool and manufacturing technology sector.

Science, Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies Alliance
SEMTA is the sector skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies. It is working closely with aerospace to drive improvements in productivity by transforming skills.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
SMMT is the trade association for the motor industry in the UK. The SBAC has an agreement with SMMT for the routine delivery of aspects of our enterprise excellence programmes through the SMMT/SBAC Industry Forum.

Joint Government and Industry Initiatives

Aerospace Innovation & Growth Team
The SBAC works closely with the AeIGT, which was set up by the DTI to draw on the expertise of all major stakeholders in the industry and look 20 years ahead to consider ways in which UK Aerospace can continue to increase in strength, with the vision that by 2022:  "The UK will offer a global Aerospace Industry, the world's most innovative and productive location, leading to sustainable growth for all its stakeholders."

International Agencies and Associations

Aerospace Industries Association (of America)
The AIA represents the leading manufacturers and suppliers of aerospace systems, components, equipment, services and information technology in the USA. The SBAC has a growing relationship with the AIA.

Aerospace Industries Association of Canada
AIAC is a member-driven, not-for-profit national trade association that promotes and facilitates Canadian competitiveness in the global market for aerospace goods and services.

Airports Council International
ACI is the international association of the world's airports. Its prime purpose is to foster cooperation among its member airports and with other partners in world aviation, including governmental, airline and aircraft manufacturing organisations. It has regional associations in Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, North American and the Pacific.

American Association of Airport Executives
The AAAE's primary goal is to assist airport executives in fulfilling their responsibilities to the airports and communities they serve. It sponsors over 80 speciality workshops and conferences around the world each year.

Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe
The SBAC is working with the ASD, which was formed in a merger of European Association of Aerospace Industries (AECMA), the European Defence Industries Group and the association of the European space industry (EUROSPACE). Members include:

European Aviation Safety Agency
The European Aviation Safety Agency is an agency of the European Union which has been given specific regulatory and executive tasks in the field of aviation safety. The Agency constitutes a key part of the European Union's strategy to establish and maintain a high uniform level of civil aviation safety in Europe. For information on fees click here.

European Regions Airline Association
ERA is the only body representing the interests of the intra-European air transport industry in Europe. An association of over 220 companies, representing the entire industry, including 70 airlines, 40 airports and over 100 associate and affiliate members comprising aircraft & engine manufacturers, international & regional airports and avionic suppliers & service providers.

European Space Association
ESA is Europe's gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe.

Federal Aviation Administration
The FAA is responsible for the safety of civil aviation in the USA. Its major roles include: regulating civil aviation to promote safety and developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft.

International Air Transport Association
IATA is the global trade association that represents and serves 270 airline members who comprise 98% of scheduled international air traffic. The association promotes safe, secure, and efficient international air transport within a framework of clearly defined and recognised industry standards. It also provides a wide range of products and services to airlines, travel agencies and other partners in the air transport industry.

Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies
SJAC is a non-profit association. Its members are mainly Japanese enterprises engaged in manufacturing and development of aircraft, engines, avionics, equipment, space vehicle and related products in Japan.

Academia

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
The EPSRC is the UK Government's leading funding agency for research and training in engineering and the physical sciences.

Natural Environment Research Council
NERC provides independent research and training in the environmental sciences. Its mission is to gather and apply knowledge, improve understanding and predict the behaviour of the natural environment and its resources.

NERC Centres for Atmospheric Science
NCAS is a NERC collaborative centre.  Its role is to provide the UK with national capability in atmospheric science research. NCAS also provides research outcomes for government policy-making and for the wider UK science base.

Parliamentary Groups

House of Commons Defence Committee
The Defence Committee is appointed to examine on behalf of the House of Commons the expenditure, administration and policy of the MoD (and any associated public bodies).

House of Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee
TISC is appointed to examine on behalf of the House of Commons the expenditure, administration and policy of the DTI and any associated public bodies. It carries out its work by taking evidence from relevant interests.

The Air League
The Air League is active in promoting an interest in aviation among young people; supporting the development of effective military aviation; stimulating internationally competitive aircraft manufacturing and air transport industries and in encouraging general aviation in the UK. The SBAC is a corporate member and has joined the Air League on common lobby campaigns.

Professional Bodies

Royal Aeronautical Society 
RAeS is the one multi-disciplinary professional institution dedicated to the global aerospace community. The SBAC is a corporate member of the Society and works with it on education and professional standards and sustainable aviation.

Unions

Amicus 
Amicus, the largest manufacturing union in the UK, with over one million members in the public and private sectors. In 2004 SBAC undertook two studies with Amicus on the high performance work place and on accessing government finance for industry - both funded by DTI grants.
