These are some of the major issues the SBAC is currently involved with or monitoring.

REACH

The new EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation (and Restriction) of Chemicals) regulation sets out the new requirements for the use of all chemicals and substances that are used in manufacturing processes throughout the EU. SBAC anticipates that this legislation will impact the majority of aerospace and defence companies in some way through introducing new legal requirements.

The regulation, which came into force 1 June 07, applies to all substances that are manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities exceeding 1 tonne per legal entity, per annum. Members are encouraged to find out more about their legal obligations by viewing the SBAC REACH information page, (click below for further information)

Sustainable Aviation

Sustainable Aviation is a long term strategy which sets out the collective approach of UK aviation to tackling the challenge of ensuring a sustainable future for industry. A world-first, the UK's Sustainable Aviation strategy was launched in 2005 and brings together the main players from UK airlines, airports, manufacturers and ATM providers. The first Progress Report was published in 2006 and the next will be published later in 2008.

Defence Industrial Strategy

The Government's Defence Industrial Strategy was launched in December 2005. SBAC is playing a leading role in emphasising to Government the vital importance of implementing such a strategy if the UK is to transform its defence industrial base to meet the new requirements emerging in the defence market. Government is just over half way through a two year implementation plan and it continues to be important for industry to be fully engaged in this process.

Ethics: anti-bribery and corruption forum

In July 2006 the UK's leading defence companies and trade associations made a written commitment to promote best practice in combating bribery and corruption. The commitment was part of establishing the UK Defence Industry Anti-corruption Forum. SBAC is seeking to increase the number of companies participating in this forum in addition to supporting and promote international initiatives to encourage best practice on anti-corruption and other ethical issues.

R&T investment vital for UK competitiveness

The future competitiveness of UK aerospace depends on maintaining the UK as one of the best locations for aerospace investment. SBAC is dedicated to ensuring the UK remains a competitive location for investment in research and new technology (R&T) by increasing the awareness of the importance of investment in aerospace R&T support mechanisms offered by UK Government.

21st century supply chains (SC21)

In 2006 the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) launched its 21st Century Supply Chains (SC21) programme. It is an industrial change programme, developed by and for the UK aerospace and defence industry, in order to raise the performance of its supply chains. International competition, together with the challenges posed by the defence industrial strategy, necessitates rapid improvement in the effectiveness of our supply chains. At the same time, industry must ensure that it delivers competitive solutions for customers whilst maintaining profitable business growth.

Autonomous systems

Autonomous systems, including UAVs, are important areas of future growth for both civil and defence companies. SBAC has an autonomy network which supports the interests and aspirations of its members and regional partners. As interest in autonomous systems and UAVs continues to increase. SBAC is keen to help co-ordinate and focus industry's interests and to take up regulatory and other government issues arising from relevant programmes, such as ASTREA.

Security and Resilience

The SBAC security and resilience programme supports industry's crucial role in delivering security capabilities across the world. SBAC has established a Security & Resilience Network to develop its member companies' contribution to security and resilience. SBAC and its company members are key members of the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers' Community (RISC). This body incorporates companies from across the security and resilience sector, alongside other trade bodies and think tanks, and is developing a strategic relationship with Government to help co-ordinate major issues and procurement activities.
