UK aerospace industry survey 2009
The survey shows that the number of new orders for our industry is considerably lower at £35bn than it was in 2007 (£46bn). It seems that the order book in the industry peaked in late 2007 and has been in decline since. The current order book, if it survives the credit crunch, appears sufficient to support continued growth in the industry. However, some orders have already been cancelled ? and there may be more cancellations in the coming months.
Of major concern when we look to the longer term, is the fall in R&D expenditure, which has fallen by about 24 per cent from £2.41bn to £1.83bn. Given the cost pressure that companies are under, the immediate outlook in both defence and civil markets, and the migration to nations spending more on R&D it is not a surprise that costs are being cut. But this is a substantial drop which, if sustained, could reduce our competitiveness on the international stage.
